Fanfiction Posting/Updating -- Heads up
Mar 05, 2010 - 10:12 AM - by Julie
Hey,

Just wanted to post a quick heads up to everyone.

When posting/updating your fanfiction, the forum rules state that

You have to have a date present in the thread title stating when you last updated or if you're posting a new fanfiction, simply put the date of when you created it. Then the next time you come to add a new chapter, edit the thread title and put in the updated date.

So be careful, and remember to add in 2010! It's easy to forget, and just leave 09 in there, and simply update the day and month. But if you forget to update the year as well, your story can easily be moved into the Graveyard section by the moderators.

[Event] NS Valentine's Day Weekend 2010!
Feb 10, 2010 - 9:31 PM - by Julie
NS Valentine’s Day Weekend!

In light of the upcoming Valentine’s Day weekend, we here at NS thought we would make our own spin on it! NS Valentine’s Day Weekend! Valentine’s Day is all about showing appreciation and love. So show your appreciation and love for the users who contribute artwork, fanfictions and alike to our Community.

Take a moment to comment on your favourite artwork, fanfiction chapter or perhaps even a music video. It won’t take you long, but will give the creator/author a lot of joy!

And to make things even more tempting, and me sharing some love from my side of NS, I am giving away free paid subscription days to those who comment and spread the love!

All you have to do is post a comment where you haven’t commented before* on a fanfiction (either a chapter, or a whole story at once if it’s completed), a music video thread** or an artwork thread.

This promotion will last the entire Valentine’s Day weekend, from February 12th 2010 (starting at midnight Oslo, Norway time) to February 14th 2010 (ending at midnight Oslo, Norway time)***.

Now, how does this work actually?

You comment and gather points! 2 points equals 1 day of the free paid sub subscription.

You comment, comment, and comment some more! The moderators will keep an eye on the posts made during the time period of the 12th to the 14th. We count the number of posts you make during this time period in the respective forums and divide that number by 2 to get the number of free paid subscription days you will get. Then I add that number to your account once the Valentine’s Day Weekend is finished.

Which paid subscription are we talking about here?

The paid subscription you will receive is the Gold Paid Subscription. You can read more about it here: http://forums.naughty-seduction.net/...ead.php?t=6173

What if I get an odd number, like 5 points?

If you get an odd number, like for an example 5 points, then I will add two and a half day of the paid subscription to your account.

You will also get a little badge you can put in your signature if you want to, that says "I shared the love in the NS Valentine’s Day Weekend".

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask either myself or Skauble

* Comments on previous chapters are allowed (but not counted). For an example, you’re reading a story and you’ve already commented on chapters 1-5 before, and now chapter 6 is posted and you comment on chapter 6. You will then get 1 point. Also, if chapter 6 is posted before February 12th 2010, but you haven’t commented on it yet, but you comment after the 12th, you will get a point.

** Only the music video forums apply, and not the Video Directory.

*** If you look at the bottom of the forum homepage (http://forums.naughty-seduction.net/), you will see "All times are GMT+1. The time is now ...) if you haven’t set the forum clock according to your own time zone. The time stated there is the time in Norway.

[Interview] February 2010 Interview: biscuits
Feb 01, 2010 - 7:04 PM - by westwingwolf
Interview: biscuits

1) If you could visit any place at any time period, where would you go and what would you do?

I studied Latin and Roman history in high school, so I think it would be fascinating to experience the Pax Romana. I also quite like the idea of Regency England. I am built for the ideal of beauty in that time – dresses that showcase pale skin and an ample bosom.

I also like the idea of living in a time when each brief touch between men and women was overwhelming because it was so rare, when each dance together was a revelation in body language and contact. I find the anticipation and weight given to each touch sexy.

2) Have you ever met anyone famous?

Most of the famous people I’ve encountered are on the political/legal end of the spectrum. I’ve met or been within spitting distance of all of the 2008 Democratic candidates for president except Hilary. I’ve met Chief Justice John Roberts and spent some time with former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno.

In terms of celebrities, I did give Maura Tierney (Abby on ER) directions to get out of a building once. She was very nice, if distracted.

3) If you could meet any famous person, alive or dead, who would it be and what would you say/do?

I find Craig Ferguson hilarious and the Winchester boys from Supernatural downright edible, but I don’t really have anyone in mind that I’m dying to meet.

If I do encounter someone famous, I just hope that I’m reasonably intelligent and articulate and avoid falling and/or spilling things.

4) If you could switch lives with any person, who would you choose and why? If you want to switch with a person who is dead, we’ll assume that you wanted to live their life while he/she was alive.

I love my family and my friends, and I’d rather see that I can make out of this life.

5) Who is your favorite author, alive or dead, and why?

I don’t have one. It’s not for lack of exposure. I’m a voracious reader, and I have found many books and, by extension, authors I admire. But for an author to be my favorite, they would have to have written multiple books that I count among my absolute, all-time favorites, and so far that hasn’t happened.

6) What is your favorite book and why?

If I had to choose just one to showcase here, I’d have to go with Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ’s Childhood Pal by Christopher Moore. It is equal parts hilariously irreverent and surprisingly moving with both slapstick charm and philosophical depth. On top of that, Moore has striking characters and a creative plot which he develops through vivid, lyrical description and word choice.

7) Who is your favorite singer, alive or dead, and why?

My sister. She has a clear, sweet, accurate soprano that soars through the silence and never fails to give me chills.

8) What is your favorite song and why?

The words and melody are equally important, so I can’t choose just one with lyrics. But if I had to pick an instrumental favorite, I’d go with Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

9) What is your favorite movie and why?

One of my all-time favorites in Roman Holiday with Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn. I used to think the ending was a bit of a letdown, but now that I’m older, it just makes me appreciate the film that much more.

10) What is your favorite television show and why?

I’m quite partial to Lie to Me, Bones, Supernatural and The Mentalist. They have interesting premises and rich, round characters chock full of tension.

11) Who is your favorite actor/actress, alive or dead, and why?

I’m a fan of Hugh Laurie. The man does everything well – sings, performs comedy sketches, composes, plays piano, writes books.

12) What is the one movie/television show that you would never admit to family, friends, co-workers that you watch? Yes, I know asking defeats the point, but spill your guts anyway.

I confess that I watch General Hospital with some regularity. I also, though I haven’t watched it in quite a while, have been known to catch some Gossip Girl.

13) Do people in your Real Life know that you are a member of NS?

A few close friends and family know. Thanks to the name, I still haven’t been able to convince my mom that it isn’t some freaky porn site.

14) Do people in your Real Life know that you read/write fanfiction?

Again, some close friends and family. I don’t broadcast it, but I don’t lie and deny it either.

15) When did you first start reading fanfiction?

I discovered it about 5 or 6 years ago, browsing through other fandoms first. I really got sucked into Chlex fanfic when I discovered Zannie’s Web site. From there I found NS.

16) When did you first get started in writing fanfiction?

I started in 2006. Empire is the first fic I ever attempted though I’ve written some short work in the meantime. It was around that time I delurked and started posting more in the forums because I learned how wonderful feedback is.

17) Is fanfic writing just a hobby for you or do you hope to go further with your writing?

Writing fanfic is definitely a hobby, but writing has been a big force in my life. I’ve studied writing and there’s a piece of me that wants to do it professionally, but I’ve done more editing than writing in my work life.

18) When you aren’t writing awesome fanfics, what do you do and/or want to be doing?

I’m currently working with veterans, but that might change in the next couple of months. I come from a musical family, so to kick back I sing with them, I play the oboe, I read, I do pilates.

19) How and why did you first get interested in Chlex? What do you like most about the characters? What do you hate about them?

I always liked the characters and portrayals of Lex and Chloe. They are such complex, flawed, real, wonderful characters. I started out rooting for Chlark, but became more and more disillusioned by Clark the more he fell for Lana. Then AM and MR started having more scenes together in Season 3, and the chemistry between them was tangible. The more I read of Chlex fanfic, the more it reinforced my thoughts, and I was hooked.

20) How and why did you first get interested in writing Chlex fanfiction?

The show had such potential with the pair in Season 3 and then we had to watch as they systematically threw it all away. Starting to write down my ideas was an attempt to fix what was broken and help keep myself sane.

21) Is there anything while reading Chlex fanfiction that you really like/hate?

I am addicted to the arranged/fake/convenient marriage plot. It truly is a sickness. I consider myself an intelligent, independent feminist most of the time, but something about those stories turns me into a puddle of fluff and domesticity.

In terms of my dislikes, I’ve never been able to get into songfics. I see a fic full of lyrics, and that’s it. I stop reading. I also am not a fan of the instant love fanfic, particularly when sex is the catalyst for these sudden declarations. They can be in love at the outset, they can have a latent UST simmering in the backstory, but they cannot go from acquaintances to soulmates in an eyeblink or a rumble between the sheets. I like a slow, believable burn.

22) What (if any) other fandoms do you read/write for and why?

None. I haven’t found any other fan community that I’d like to write for.

23) What type of environment do you need to write? For example: extreme quiet, blaring music, subtle background noise, etc.

I tend to avoid extreme quiet and extreme noise, but other than that I’m pretty flexible. Besides, if I really get going, either reading or writing, the rest of the world just melts away anyway.

24) How do your ideas come to you? Do you always write them or do you let them disappear?

I usually come across a phrase or scenario that I really connect to Chlex, and I’m off. I don’t write them down right away. I figure the bad ideas will eventually fade, and the good ones will rattle around inside my head for a while, germinating and getting better.

25) Do you plan a story from the beginning to end or start with an idea and let the chapters come to you as they do?

I know the framework or blueprints of the whole story first, but I stay flexible about how I get from one plot point to the next and see where my imagination takes me.

26) Do you ever input certain aspects about yourself into the lives of Chloe and Lex? For example: Do you have Chloe listen to your favorite song or have Lex watch your favorite movie?

Into Lex and Chloe’s lives? No. But Empire’s Lucas and Helene each have a hint of me in them.

27) Do you associate your writing with any songs even if it isn’t a songfic?

Nope. I might have music playing in the background as I write, but there’s no conscious association.

28) Do you prefer writing easy, quick stories or long, layered stories?

I like both. I think that when working on a lengthy, complex tale, it helps to have some shorter, lighter work to break things up and keep you fresh.

29) Which do you find easier to write: dialogue or description or are the equally hard/easy?

It depends on the day and what scene I’m working on. I find it easy to describe the surroundings and emotional turmoil of Lex and Chloe, but I find it hard to describe what they’re doing in each scene – the extraneous motions of everyday life. I find writing dialogue between Lex and Chloe stressful, but Lucas just rolls right onto the page.

30) Is there anything that you won’t write or feel uncomfortable writing?

I don’t think I’m the best smut writer, but I’m not uncomfortable writing it. I also tend away from the really sappy fluffy stuff. I’m just too cynical to make the characters gush about their fairytale love and incandescent happiness.

31) What do you do to cure writer’s block? What advice can you give to new writers who might be scared to post their stories?

If I feel stuck, I’ll free write. I’ll sit down for 15 to 20 minutes at a time and just put pen to paper about whatever pops into my head, ignoring mechanics and organization. In going back and reading through it, even if the content has no direct link to fanfic, I’m usually able to find some idea or phrase that sparks my interest and gets me going again.
To aspiring writers I would say try to identify what you admire most about the fanfics you like to read and try to emulate those things in your own writing. Read your writing aloud before posting it. If it sounds awkward or wrong or choppy, it probably is. If you’re nervous, there are some lovely betas who can give you some support and feedback before you put your work out there for the forums at large. And go for it. Don’t give up. This is a wonderful community, and I can’t think of a better place to read or write fanfic.

32) Have you ever read someone else’s fanfic and wished you thought of the idea first?

All the time, but I enjoy sitting back and watching the story unfold as much as writing it.

33) Have you ever wanted someone else to write your story idea

Not really. I kinda like my ideas.

34) Are reviews vital to keep you writing or will you finish a story even if you aren’t certain people are reading?

I tend to finish what I start, even books I don’t really like. Once I commit to something, I’m usually in it for the long haul.

That said, reviews are vital. Writers offer up their time, their efforts and their work, which can feel pretty personal at times. We make our selves vulnerable each time we update, and I can’t tell you what it means to get responses, even critical ones, to show that our efforts have resonated with someone.

35) Have you ever had a review that made you think something about your story that you never thought of before? Has a review ever made you want to make a major change to your story?

I’ve definitely had reviews give me some new ideas and new perspectives. I haven’t changed major elements based on reviews, but feedback has subtly shaped my fics.

36) How badly do you want to write for Smallville or at least rewrite some of the seasons?

I used to want to desperately. It’s what got me into writing fanfic. But I’ve given up on the past few seasons.

37) Do you see Chloe and Lex or other Smallville characters in different television shows or movies? Meaning, do you watch a movie like Star Wars and start thinking that Lex is just like Han Solo?

Not really. I’m not consciously looking for it. Perhaps I see a little of Chloe and Veronica Mars in each other.

38) What do you think AM and MR would say about your fics if they read them? How would you feel if someone from the show did read your writings?

I would hope they would tell me that while they were horrible offended by the things I imagined them doing to each other, they couldn’t help by appreciate the word choice and style in which I composed these fics.

39) If you could have any super power, what would it be and why? Would you use it for good or evil?

That’s a tough one. I think being able to time travel would be frustrating because you couldn’t change the really awful things. I think being invulnerable would get lonely. I like attention too much to want to be invisible. Telepathy would be intrusive and give me too much information. Telekinesis would make me even lazier. I suppose I would like to fly, to feel the air rush past me and watch the world roll beneath me.
